AAMC’s GME Day of Action

Join AAMC Action and urge Congress to expand federal support for GME

The United States is facing a projected shortage of up to 124,000 physicians by 2034. As our nation’s population continues to rapidly grow and age, coupled with an aging physician workforce nearing retirement, the country faces a critical need to educate and train more doctors to help ensure there are enough physicians to care for patients and communities nationwide.

Medicare is the primary public source of funding for graduate medical education (GME) and Congress capped this support for nearly 25 years, limiting this critical investment in our health care workforce. Current proposed legislation—the bipartisan Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2023 (S. 1302/H.R. 2389) — would build on historical bipartisan Congressional investment in 2020 and 2022, and responsibly increase the number of federally supported GME positions by 14,000 over seven years.

To help improve patient access to care, alleviate the physician shortage, and strengthen and diversify the health care workforce, we encourage you to urge your members of Congress to cosponsor this vital legislation today by taking action below.
