Workforce Programs
Health Resources and Services and Administration (HRSA) Title VII and VIII programs play an essential role in recruiting a diverse health workforce by supporting underrepresented, rural, and economically disadvantaged students through recruitment, education, training and mentorship opportunities. Programs like the Health Career Opportunity Program, Centers of Excellence, and Area Health Education Centers make careers in medicine more accessible to students nationwide and recruit and retain providers to practice in underserved communities. Though there is bipartisan support for these health workforce programs, it is crucial that Congress provides robust funding for all these programs. The AAMC Action community works to protect and strengthen other HRSA programs to improve the health workforce and patients’ access to care.
We also support federal recruitment programs, such as Public Service Loan Forgiveness, the National Health Service Corps, and those administered by the VA, DOD, and Indian Health Service, which encourage graduates to pursue careers that benefit communities in need by providing student loan relief to physicians.
AAMC Action Community Voices
HRSA programs like the National Health Service Corps (NHSC), Health Career Opportunity Program, and Centers of Excellence not only make careers in medicine more accessible to students nationwide, they also recruit and retain healthcare providers to practice in rural and other underserved communities. Share with the AAMC Action Community the power of these workforce programs.
